A Bond Between Generations

In the equestrian world, a passion for horses often transcends generations. For Christina O'Brien, sharing this love with her daughter feels instinctual—proof that the "horse gene" runs deep and creates an unbreakable bond.

"It’s so fun that she shares our love and passion. To see her grow and develop in her riding is truly amazing. I wouldn't trade it for anything."

In the world of equestrian sport, relationships are the cornerstone of growth, support, and success. Female friendships are particularly strong in the equestrian community, often acting as a source of motivation and inspiration. Yet, perhaps the most unique and heartwarming connection is the intergenerational bond shared by mothers and daughters who both share a passion for riding.

One such bond is that of Christina O’Brien and her daughter Jennifer (12), who not only share a love for horses but also support each other in the competition ring. Christina’s journey has been shaped by her dedication to horses and the joy of watching her daughter follow in her footsteps.
Christina has spent more than 25 years in the world of show jumping. Though she took an 8-year break from competing, her passion for the sport never wavered. This year, Christina is preparing to return to the ring, reigniting her competitive spirit while cherishing the memories and lessons gained over decades.

Her journey as an equestrian has taken her across the globe, living and competing in various countries—a lifestyle that shaped her resilience and independence.

"I love horses, and I love to compete," Christina shares. "There’s nothing like the feeling of finishing a good round or reaching a goal with a young horse. My horse life and show life made me live in many countries, and that made me strong and independent."

"Enjoy the moments when you do well. Big or small, those successes are worth celebrating."

For Christina, being a supportive mother means allowing Jennifer to find her own path while offering guidance when needed. Sometimes, it also means reflecting on her own journey—mistakes made, lessons learned, and the undeniable joy of succeeding after hard work.

"It often makes me think back on how I started," Christina reflects. "I didn’t have a clue about anything—I learned a lot from my mistakes. Seeing Jennifer so focused reminds me of those early days." "I’m happy that I don’t feel nervous when I compete anymore," she laughs. "But when Jennifer is competing, it’s a different story!"
In the equestrian world, female mentorship and legacy are not just passed down through coaching—they are lived and felt every day in the relationships built around horses. Christina and Jennifer’s bond is a testament to how riding not only shapes skills but also deepens family ties.

"Enjoy the moments when you do well," Christina advises. "It’s important to take pride in your achievements while always striving to learn and grow."

As Christina prepares to get back in the ring this year, she’s more motivated than ever—not just for herself but to continue being an inspiration for her daughter.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the unique connection between mothers and daughters who ride together, learn together, and support one another. For Christina and Jennifer, it’s about more than just competing—it’s about sharing a lifelong passion.
